As this 3rd Edition goes to press in late June 2022, we note that 2 articles have appeared this month in prestigious publications, both confirming what we have been saying since the 1st Edition in 2019.
1. The New England Journal of Medicine published on June 1, 2022. The study Enterovirus D 68 in the Anterior Horn Cells of a Child with Acute Flaccid Myelitis by (a) Matthew R. Vogt M.D, Ph.D. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, N.C. and (b) Peter F Wright M.D. and (c) William F. Hickey MD, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Lebanon N.H, USA.
This research paper in the NEJM describes the autopsy findings of a child who died of Paralytic Polio, i.e. “Acute Flaccid Paralysis”, following an Enterovirus D68 infection. Thousands of cases have already been reported in S.E. Asia since 1989.
2. Forbes Magazine: The image at the top of this page accompanied the June 10, 2022, article by William A. Haseltine in Forbes Magazine, entitled There May Be A New Polio Epidemic On its Way. The author uses the surrogate (CDC) name 'Acute Flaccid Myelitis' in place of Polio, which we refer to as The New Polio. This informative Forbes article, the first in a series on enteroviruses, describes the illness that we have correctly called in our writings the New Polio, or Poliomyelitis.
